Over the past 18 months, we’ve been immersed in a multi-year project, FIVE BOROUGHS/ONE CITY, in which teams of commissioned artists have engaged communities in each of the five boroughs of New York City to write, develop, and perform plays based on the issues and themes relevant to the neighborhoods being explored. We have done this through interviews, community engagement & outreach, workshops, and developmental readings with targeted feedback.

Over the next couple of years, Working Theater will continue engaging the communities of origin and developing the work, as well as touring productions back to our venue partners located in neighborhoods where working people live.

This year we’ll also continue our adult-education program called TheaterWorks!, where we teach working adults how to write, direct, and even perform in their own plays. In addition, we haven’t forgotten about artists outside the Five Boroughs/One City initiative, and will be supporting and giving readings to three new works.
